What a week! Challenge, g r o w t h + more!

This week’s genius hour was very difficult to navigate.  Unfortunately, my meeting with the transition counsellors was cancelled due to a situation at the school.  While we plan to connect soon, a date has not been set and likely will not occur before my genius hour project timeline is up.

Since my goal is ultimately to create a working document for future use,  I decided to focus some of my time this week on compiling/reviewing other resources (paper and web),making some phone calls, researching a visually appealing design for my project (thank you Canva!), thinking about my own personal “growth-mindset”, inspiring hope to students and reading up on connecting with students/at-risk youth.  Sounds like a lot.  It is. But every single second has been rewarding.

As luck would have it… I answered the phone today and ended up speaking to someone from a local agency which is an outreach service that supports at-risk youth in a potential homeless situation. The worker is coming to visit a client on Monday. She has agreed to connect with me regarding my personal project and provide me with a more personal introduction to the information/resources on their organisation and their community partners.

This is exactly why I love my job at an alternative secondary school/finish line high school.  I am able to learn from, and contribute, to my community by keeping my eyes wide open for opportunities to learn….every.single.day!

Moving forward to this week, I am a little intimidated about how I am going to compile all of this information.  I am trying to categorize my resources to keep things simple for my graduates.  I was daydreaming this week and had a vision of the infographic and I decided I wanted to use QR codes.  Thanks to a TPACK Quest  in my ITC course, I was able to learn how to generate these codes to include them in my final project.

I am hoping this week brings together the content of my genius hour and promotes more personal and professional learning as I navigate my genius hour project! p.s. Brene Bown’s book ‘dare to lead’ continues to be fascinating.  I have underlined, highlighted or starred s something on every page I’ve read.  I think every aspiring teacher needs to read this book. It is very insightful and practical.   I think my favourite quote (so far), other than learning about the concept of being a (wo)man in the arena is…. “If you’re going to dare greatly, you’re going to get your ass kicked at some point.  If you choose courage, you will absolutely know failure, disappointment, setback and even  heartbreak.  That’s why we call it courage.  That’s why it’s so rare.”
